Bell Media: The Corporate Gutting of Democracy

Technocratic rationality is an insidious, and it is disgusting. Bell Media have decided, in 2024, to cut more than 6000 jobs. Bell Media, you know, owns the CTV, sponsors the Toronto Maple Leafs, and generally undergirds most of the local news across the prairies, is a corporate mass media conglomerate. They own Bell communications, Virgin and Lucky Mobile. The will close most of “The Source” stores, and their MBA decision-makers will drink heavily to their cost-cutting measures.

We may feel sorry for the journalists – mostly local – who lost their jobs… and there is much to grieve in this respect. But, what happens to the services they provided? And what happens to the people whose services have now been cut by their corporate “restructuring”?

Does Bell feel any responsibility for the citizens in Cape Breton, who are suffering from an historic snowstorm? Bell networks used to remind people in Saskatchewan to turn their clocks back and forth (when that is not practiced in Saskatchewan). Tone deaf? No… not enough. They turned what was a vibrant information network into crap. “Encrapification,” as BC Premier David Eby said today, seems more appropriate.

In an age of disinformation, Bell Media just gutted a cornerstone of democratic society in the name of profits.

Bell is guilty, and after the most recent lay-offs, announced increases to their shareholder dividends.

Join together with me and renounce the media oligarchy – and cut your ties with Bell!
