Israel has told the world: It is a genocide; will we believe them?
Israel is telling the world that it is responding to the Al Aqsa Flood, began on October 7, in which Hamas broke through the Israeli-Gaza border and killed hundreds of Israelis and kidnapping more than a hundred, including non-combatants. Israel wants cases of eruptive violence like this to cease as part of its legitimate security concerns. It is responding to eruptive violence without any concern for the structural violence which both acts as a context for this eruptive violence, but with a genocidal intent. Don’t believe me? They have already told us.
Today, Oct. 9, Israeli Defence Minister, Yoav Galant was recorded saying: “These [the Palestinians] are human animals; we will treat them accordingly.” Yesterday, Oct. 8, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu was recorded saying: ‘Gazans should move away from targeted areas and seek shelter elsewhere,’ immediately following with, ‘we will level every corner of Gaza to the ground.’ If there was any doubt over the sincerity of these messages, we should understand that they have missile-attacked the Al-Shati and the Jabalia refugee camps, and mosques. We should understand that they have placed the entirety of Gaza (not just Hamas) under siege: no food, no water, no electricity, no safe shelter. It is now a concentration camp.
Make no mistake – the story that Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people in Gaza is being used to justify “Israeli defence” of itself and go after Hamas is a lie; Israel is going after the entire Palestinian people inside Gaza. They have prepared more than 300,000 troops on the border in preparation, and I fear that it may only be a matter of hours. It is intended to be a massacre, a genocide. The United States and the EU is complicit with the genocide. The US has stationed an aircraft carrier and 4 destroyers off Gaza’s coast, and the EU is in the process of withdrawing more than $750 million in promised humanitarian aid to the Palestinians. In terms of history – this is unprecedented: democratic nations are preparing for the eradication of a recognized group of of the human population. They are not “human animals,” but they are indeed being treated as anything but human.
Netanyahu must be stopped, and it will take other actors besides the United States and the EU to stop him. Full Stop. Netanyahu’s reasons include more than revenge; they also include consolidating his power in Israel and increasing its regional prosperity and security. Full Stop.
Why is Netanyahu Doing This?
Very simply: The Abrahamic Accords which Donald Trump orchestrated with Morocco, the UAE, and Bahrain hinged normalization of diplomatic ties between Israel and its Middle Eastern neighbours on the hinge of anti-Iranian influence. Saudi Arabia and Israel have been mortal enemies with Iran for decades. Through this normalization, Saudi Arabia is interested in gaining nuclear power at two levels, for energy production to diversify its oil-based economy, and for weaponization, especially if Iran had nuclear power. Israel is interested in opening up markets for its increased prosperity, but also entrenching its security in such a deal. The change that the Abrahamic Accords initiated was that such normalization no longer hinged on a just resolution with a two-state solution to the Palestinian problem; it instead hinged on a mutual distrust of Iran and economic enhancement of the participating countries. See, “Palestinians must not have veto over Arab-Israel deals, Netanyahu tells UN.”
One of the biggest questions that has been posed to me is whether the Al Aqsa Flood was Hamas trying to defend Palestinians. If we ask: why now? why this way? then the previous paragraph answers it. Hamas was well aware that it had to change the paradigm. It had to put the freedom and self-determination of the Palestinian people back on the table. They had to remind the Arab and Muslim world that Israel was treating Palestinians as less than human.
Today, Mahmoud Abbas, the representative of the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, talked with Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Princes of Saudi Arabia. And Saudi Arabia has reiterated its historical support of the Palestinian people. They have been reminded.
Has Hamas Correctly Anticipated Israel’s Response?
I expect that they did. You know when someone says, “they’ll kill us!” is a much different realization than when they start the killing. It’s the difference between, “That’ll suck!” and “Oh shit!” But Hamas has the support of the Palestinians in Gaza. And they all know that fighting for their freedom and their self-determination is much better than sitting idly by while they are treated as less than human. They are using the resources at their disposal to fight and die for a battle they believe is worth it.
The only question is whether we will stay on the sidelines and watch a genocide occur. Will we be complicit with the US and the EU as they aid and abet Israel? Or will some portion of the world step in and say with the Palestinians: Palestinians have equal rights with Israelis; Palestinians have the right to self-determination; and, THIS IS A GENOCIDE!
